Tim Tszyu v Takeshi Inoue to face off ahead of World Boxing Organisation world title fight
After failing to secure fights with division standouts Brian Castano and Tony Harrison, WBO #1 super welterweight contender Tim Tszyu has announced that he’ll return to the ring November 17th against former title challenger Takeshi Inoue.
Tszyu (19-0, 15 KO) tells Wide World of Sports that the Harrison fight was “thought to be a done deal,” but when Tszyu’s team gave the “slow to respond” former champion a 24 hour deadline to sign the contract, Harrison instead “took to Twitter to post an emoji of the middle finger, followed by a peace sign. He later officially pulled out.” Tim Tszyu next fight
Instead, he gets Inoue (17-1-1, 10 KO). The Japanese veteran got virtually swept by Jaime Munguia in 2019 and has since won four straight over poor competition. He’s definitely durable, though, so maybe he can give Tszyu some rounds; none of the Aussie’s last three bouts went past five, with Dennis Hogan lasting the longest.
The 31-year-old Inoue (17-1-1), the WBO's No.7-ranked fighter in the division, plans to disrupt Tszyu's rampaging path to the top.
'Tszyu is a very good fighter but I'm very confident in my ability,' Inoue said via a translator on Thursday.
'This is an exciting opportunity for me to make a mark on the world stage and I truly believe I will finish Tszyu with a knockout in this fight'.
In just 13 months, Tszyu has beaten former world champion Jeff Horn, Kiwi Bowyn Morgan, Irishman Dennis Hogan and Stevie Spark, all inside the distance.
But he declared this fight the most important of his burgeoning career.
'Inoue is a very accomplished and talented fighter. He is crafty in the ring and like all Japanese boxers, very brave.' Tszyu said.
'He will need to be though because I know he has never fought anyone like me before.
'I'm putting in the hard work now and come fight night, I'm going to be ready to show the world once again just what I can do'.
