Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena will on Thursday be officially announced as the new venue for Tim Tszyu’s fight with Takeshi Inoue.
The venue has been operating as a vaccination hub but by Wednesday 17 November it will be opened to 75 per cent capacity, meaning over 10,000 tickets will be available.
Promoter No Limit exhausted all avenues in trying to keep the event on the Gold Coast but Queensland’s tough border policies ultimately forced the change.
“We had already sold 70 per cent of the venue so of course we were keen to stay on the Gold Coast but the requirement for a total of 28 days of isolation or quarantine just wasn’t workable,” says promoter George Rose.
“Tszyu and his team, plus undercard fighters, and yourself (!!), would have been up for 14 days in home isolation before crossing the border into Queensland for another 14 days in a quarantine bubble.”
Inoue will fly direct to Sydney from Japan later this month.
The undefeated Brock Jarvis has vowed the occasion won’t phase him when he makes his American debut this Sunday (AEDT) in Fresno, California.
“It’s going to be all business. I’m just going to do what I do – go out there and try to win every round,” says Jarvis.
The rangy 23 year old has become used to a pronounced size advantage over opponents but that won’t be the case against rugged Mexican Alejandro Frias Rodriguez.
“He’s a big guy. He’s fought in the higher weight divisions and he is about my height so I’m going to have to work hard and that’s what I plan to do.”
Jai Opetaia’s mandatory status has now been made public and he will get a shot at the IBF Cruiserweight World Title in 2022 in a bout D&L Events is confident of staging on Australian soil.
Mairis Briedis holds the belt and Opetaia isn’t expecting that to change when the Latvian fights German Artur Mann on Sunday morning.
“He’s up there with the best and that even pumps me up even more because once I do fight him and I do take away the title nobody can ever take it away from me,” says Opetaia.
The 26-year-old southpaw is expected to make his return from successful hand surgery in December before his title shot early next year.
“My hand’s good now. We’re looking at having a fight on December fourth. I’m excited to get in there and let my hands go to another level.’
